Office of the Dean

Dean’s Message

Dean John Schaufelberger, Ph.D.I’ve been with the College of Built Environments since 2003, starting as a professor of construction management, then serving as the department’s chair, and now as the dean. During my time, the College has grown significantly and become one of the nation’s strongest academic collections of the built environments fields. In this time, we have also recruited some of the best faculty and most promising students.

Whether you’re starting your university education as an undergraduate student, continuing through one of our graduate programs, or honing your skills as a professional with continuing education, the College of Built Environments will prepare you to be a strong well-rounded thinker, designer, and problem solver.

While we excel in teaching and research, we are equally committed to expanding learning experiences outside the classroom. Through internships, travel abroad programs, service learning, job-site visits, government partnerships, and maker spaces, we are taking teaching beyond the walls of our buildings and exposing our students to professionals and real-world work. All of this in service of our community.

By making the Pacific Northwest our own living laboratory, we also look to the community and industry to share their needs with us. We continue building a diverse faculty, student body and staff and blending our disciplines to be truly interdisciplinary.

Through these efforts, we believe we can provide you and the rest of our students the experience you need to be successful professionals and contributors to our rapidly changing world and the grand challenges of our time—urbanization, globalism, and sustainability.

I look forward to seeing you look forward to seeing your ideas become a reality, hear how you challenge the status quo, and celebrate your successes.
